Hair

Kate Winder

Kate Winder

Owner & Salon Director

Kate and her husband Nick setup North Laine Hair Company in 2007 with the goal of creating a hair salon that was really focussed on excellent quality and customer service as well as being a great place to work.

Previously working for Royal Caribbean Cruise Line Kate enjoyed travelling the Caribbean and Americas which was excellent preparation for her joining Crystal Cruises in 2003, a company that has been recognised as the world’s best in luxury experience for an unprecedented 15 consecutive years. As assistant salon manager on the Serenity, the world’s finest cruise ship, Kate was responsible for a team that worked to the highest standards of hairdressing and customer service. That gave her the experience and inspiration to set up her own salon.

After five very successful years the salon moved to larger premises to meet the demand and offer a more luxurious environment.  Kate has been in the industry for over 20 years, gaining huge experience with all hair types, except Afro Caribbean.  As well as being one of our expert wedding hair & hair up stylists, Kate now dedicates her time to cutting and styling:

“I see one of my strengths is putting a nervous client at ease by really taking my time and giving a thorough consultation to make sure I am talking the ‘same language’ with my client”.

Knowing how difficult it can be to look after your hair, Kate is always ready for her and the team to share ‘salon secrets’, insider knowledge and tips so you can recreate the ‘salon look’ in between visits.

He has a great interest in design and furniture, using this influence to incorporate current trends with old classics to create fresh, new hairstyles. His inspiration is derived from Photography, music, art, history, buildings and the catwalks.  Highly in demand, both in salon and for shows, James works at London Fashion Week and Colour World as well as being a pioneer for the exciting Hair Club Live Open Chair Nights.

James is a Redken Certified Colourist (the most advanced Redken colour qualification) and his love of passing on his knowledge was a major influence in James being selected to become a Redken Artist.  This has given James the opportunity to create courses as well as being an educator at the Redken HQ in London.  Through his strong desire to learn and his passion for education James brings great inspiration and creativity to the team in our regular in-salon education sessions.

Rachel Whittington

Graduate Stylist

Rachel rediscovered her first true love of working with hair after a period out of the industry working in sales and customer service. During her time away from being a stylist she would find the same thing happening each day: “Every meeting, every person, I was looking at them, analysing their hair type and working out what I would do if I had them in my chair!” Rachel’s mentor offered Rachel the best advice: Everyone should follow their passion in life! This prompted Rachel to quit her job and go back to college and redo her training. Rachel joins us from Headmasters where she had been a stylist since qualifying. Rachel is very proud to have been born and raised in Brighton and was absolutely overjoyed when she joined to team to return to the city to work.

“My all time favourite cut is the graduated bob in all its forms, for its timeless quality and the fact that its a style any age either 18 or 80 can wear in a variation of lengths and angles. I am also really interested in the concept of genderless hairdressing”.

Rachel is a very warm person who wants to look after anyone who sits in front of her and put them at ease. “I do a thorough consultation, listening to lifestyle and manageability as well as the hair cut they would like so before I get started I make sure we are on the same page. I work really hard to ensure my clients always leave feeling listened to and that they can manage any style I create.”

Rachel has great passion for life and has a diverse range of interests; her garden, VW cars & her cats. Rachel loves visiting the North with her Husband to see the big striking scenery and also is considerate to the exploitation of animals by enjoying living a vegan lifestyle.

“I love having apprentices’ in our salon and we are dedicated to giving them the very best training. I think we are quite unique in the level of our training programme where the apprentice team have weekly one to one practical & theory education with me, the salon director. It is a big investment by our company but I know it is well worth it.
