Styling Team

Kate Winder

Kate Winder

Owner & Salon Director

Kate and her husband Nick setup North Laine Hair Company in 2007 with the goal of creating a hair salon that was really focussed on excellent quality and customer service as well as being a great place to work.

Previously working for Royal Caribbean Cruise Line Kate enjoyed travelling the Caribbean and Americas which was excellent preparation for her joining Crystal Cruises in 2003, a company that has been recognised as the world’s best in luxury experience for an unprecedented 15 consecutive years. As assistant salon manager on the Serenity, the world’s finest cruise ship, Kate was responsible for a team that worked to the highest standards of hairdressing and customer service. That gave her the experience and inspiration to set up her own salon.

After five very successful years the salon moved to larger premises to meet the demand and offer a more luxurious environment.  Kate has been in the industry for over 20 years, gaining huge experience with all hair types, except Afro Caribbean.  As well as being one of our expert wedding hair & hair up stylists, Kate now dedicates her time to cutting and styling:

“I see one of my strengths is putting a nervous client at ease by really taking my time and giving a thorough consultation to make sure I am talking the ‘same language’ with my client”.

Knowing how difficult it can be to look after your hair, Kate is always ready for her and the team to share ‘salon secrets’, insider knowledge and tips so you can recreate the ‘salon look’ in between visits.

James Atkinson Creative Director

James Atkinson

Creative Director

James is our Creative Director and a Redken Artist and has been a stylist and colourist for over 12 years. James joined North Laine Hair Company in 2011 from Eleven Hair in Mayfair after having worked at several of London’s leading salons throughout his early career.

James’ passion for cutting and styling really shows in his work with a particular talent for curly hair. He has a great interest in design and furniture, using this influence to incorporate current trends with old classics to create fresh, new hairstyles. His inspiration is derived from Photography, music, art, history, buildings and the catwalks.  Highly in demand, both in salon and for shows, James works at London Fashion Week and Colour World as well as being a pioneer for the exciting Hair Club Live Open Chair Nights.

James is a Redken Certified Colourist (the most advanced Redken colour qualification) and his love of passing on his knowledge was a major influence in James being selected to become a Redken Artist.  This has given James the opportunity to create courses as well as being an educator at the Redken HQ in London.  Through his strong desire to learn and his passion for education James brings great inspiration and creativity to the team in our regular in-salon education sessions.

Manesh Solanki Creative Director

Manesh Solanki

Creative Director

Manesh joined our team in March 2009 when he moved to Brighton. He quickly established many loyal clients. His technical ability in colouring, cutting, styling and hair up is second to none, having won prestigious hairdressing awards and worked on numerous major fashion shows and photo shoots with some of the best in hairdressing. Manesh is also one of our wedding hair and hair up specialists working both in salon and on location at events. To reflect client demand and his ability & experience Manesh was promoted to Style Director in March 2011 & then Creative Director in Sept 2015.

Manesh has over 20 years of experience since qualifying and has previously worked in top salons both in London (Bond St, Covent Garden and Sloane Square) and Bermuda. Manesh has many years of experience working with Afro hair and performs all Afro hair services including relaxing.

Manesh is well known for being one of the liveliest members of the team and is certainly young at heart! His popularity is reflected by how far in advanced he gets booked so make sure you book with plenty of time to ensure you can get an appointment.

Unfortunately Manesh is currently off sick due to a broken leg but we hope to see him back soon once he has fully recovered.

Corey Watts Colour Specialist

Corey Watts

Colour & Balayage Specialist

Corey, our Colour & Balayage Specialist, is one of the UK’s leading colourists having spent his career working at some of the country’s top colour salons as well as leading International Fashion Shows. From his love of painting, he has developed truly stunning balayage and freehand techniques to create absolutely beautiful hair colour results.

Corey began his training with Aveda in Cardiff and then moved to London aged 21, working across the capital from Chelsea to the West End and then Shoreditch at the highly acclaimed ‘Not Another Salon’. Developing skills to meet all clients’ needs in such a diverse city, he also honed his techniques at both the London and Paris Fashion Weeks. He recently created the colour for Rick Owens’ SS17 Paris show.

“I love developing new techniques to create the latest trends in hair colour,” Corey said. “I enjoy catering to everyone, whether it’s a classic set of highlights, a dramatic creative colour or complete colour correction”

A visit to Corey will not only end with a beautiful colour, it will involve education and easy to understand insights in to what he is doing and why.  You will come away realising how much science there is behind a fantastic colour and what makes the differences between a good colour and a great one.  In his spare time Corey spends a good portion of his life in the gym (which is easy to spot!) As well as being a big foodie and an avid cook, he also loves fashion, music, and animals.
